What Is CBD (Cannabidiol) & How Does It Work?

There’s been a lot of talk about the benefits of CBD (or Cannabidiol), but with the rise in popularity many people are now left wondering, what exactly is this stuff? With this question in mind, we decided to do some research…

What is CBD and how does it work

What Is CBD (Cannabidiol)…

There’s been a lot of talk about CBD (or Cannabidiol) and its potential benefits, but with the rise in popularity many people are now left wondering, what exactly is this stuff? Well, it’s a cannabinoid. Cannabinoids are special chemical compounds, most notably found in plants of the cannabis genus.

Cannabis is an amazing plant that actually has over 400 different chemical compounds, with usually more than 60 of these compounds considered cannabinoids. One of these cannabinoids, THC, is well known for its mind altering effects and its ability to get users high.

However, there’s a bunch of other cannabinoids that can be found in cannabis. CBD, also referred to as Cannabidiol, is the second most prominent compound found in cannabis plants. Unlike THC, this compound is non psychoactive, meaning it won’t get you high…

Well, How Does CBD Work?

CBD works by interacting with special receptors found throughout our bodies called “cannabinoid receptors”. These receptors are part of the “Endo-Cannabinoid System”. This system pretty much exists because our bodies are naturally making their own cannabinoids. In fact, most ( if not all ) animals have this system as well!

Cannabis plants have the highest concentration of Cannabinoids, including CBD, compared to any other plants. When this CBD enters our body, the cannabinoid receptors within our bodies begin to absorb it. It then uses this compound and distributes it throughout our body. Why is that a good thing, you ask…

Well, Studies show CBD to have several different medicinal properties, some include being a neuroprotectiveanti-inflammatory, and anti-emetic. Cannabidiol is proving to be useful for a variety of physical ailments, from diabetes and cancer to acne and nausea. However, it’s also beginning to show some serious potential too for psychological disorders such as Anxiety, PTSD, and Depression. This amazing compound is even showing promise in children that suffer with seizures!

How Is CBD Different From THC?

Even though both of these are considered to be cannabinoids, that does not mean they are both the same thing. These two actually affect the body in their own unique ways. CBD and THC are the two main compounds found in cannabis plants and both compounds have important health benefits. THC, for example, is often useful for providing pain relief and a variety of other benefits.

However, because THC is known to have psychoactive effects ( or “gets you high...” ), some states in the US have made THC illegal and the clinical use of this compound is often limited. With CBD though, this isn’t the case…

In recent years, CBD has gained a ton of attention and interest, especially in the medical field. One of the biggest reasons, because CBD is non-psychoactive and can’t get you high. This makes cannabidiol an easy way of getting all the benefits of cannabis, without the high!

In fact, Studies show CBD may actually help to prevent you from getting too high by reducing the negative side effects of THC, such as paranoia and memory impairment. Which is great for those that get paranoia, anxiety, or forget where they left their phone when they consume THC.

Who Should Be Using CBD?

There’s actually a great deal of people out there who could benefit from using cannabidiol. Among other things, CBD is known to help treat different neurological disorders, reduce chronic pain, and even aid in the treatment of cancer. This makes it extremely useful for a great deal of individuals suffering from medical problems…

However, most studies show that the average Joe can benefit from using CBD as well. Many everyday people actually use this as a supplement in their daily routine, due to it’s many useful properties.

While CBD can be extremely useful for treating a wide variety of ailments, there isn’t any reason the average person can’t benefit from using it as well. Studies have even shown CBD to be completely safe to use, even in higher doses.

What Are Some Benefits Of CBD?

There are many different benefits that come from using Cannabidiol. Countless studies have shown that CBD benefits a wide variety of medical conditions and ailments.

Although, that doesn’t mean you and your friends can’t use it! Regular everyday people can use CBD to actually improve their health as well. It’s probably the perfect gift for every health freak!

1. Can Help To Treat Cancer —

Researchers have found that CBD has anti-tumor effects and could possibly be used to improve the condition of cancer. Currently, standard chemotherapy is used to kill cancer cells, but unfortunately it’s also known to kill normal cells within the body…

However, studies suggest that CBD actually manages to kill the cancer cells within the body without harming the normal cells. In fact, many researchers say it seems to deplete the energy of cancer cells and get them to “commit suicide”.

Laboratory results show that CBD might even make chemotherapy more effective, by increasing the death of cancer cells without affecting normal cells (1).

2. Provides Anxiety Relief —

Many everyday individuals suffer from anxiety and it can sometimes make it hard getting through the day. For some, it can seem to take control of their very life…

With CBD however, researchers are finding that the effects of anxiety begin to disappear. Cannabidiol has been shown to reduce anxiety in regular healthy individuals (1), as well as patients with social anxiety disorder (2).

This has led researchers to suggest that it may possibly be effective for conditions like panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). (3)

…Studies show that cannabidiol can even reduce the anxiety sometimes caused by THC! (4)

3. Helps To Eliminate Nausea —

CBD has a wide variety of benefits, but some benefits of CBD include having anti-nausea and anti-emetic properties. These properties make cannabidiol a great solution for easing nausea and vomiting.

Not to mention, cannabidiol also effects the “endocannabinoid system”. Evidence shows that by manipulating the “endocannabinoid system” we can regulate nausea and vomiting. Not just in humans, but in animals as well.

Preclinical research indicates that CBD might just be effective for treating nausea and vomiting caused by chemotherapy or other therapeutic treatments too! (1)

4. Relieves Pain and Inflammation —

Most people will often use prescriptions or over-the-counter medication to find relief for things such as chronic pain and stiffness. However, researchers are finding evidence that a non-psychoactive compound found in marijuana, CBD, might be useful as a treatment for chronic pain…

A lot of people that use CBD for chronic pain feel as though it offers a more natural way to reduce pain. In fact, taking CBD can offer pain relief, as well as help to prevent nervous system degeneration. Canada has even approved it for multiple sclerosis and cancer pain.

The Journal of Experimental Medicine published a study that showed CBD had significantly reduced the pain in some mice and rats. This study also found that it had reduced chronic inflammation as well. (1)

This is a big deal because chronic inflammation can often lead to many non-infectious diseases. According to the National Center for Biotechnology Information, these diseases include heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer’s, autoimmune disease, and more…

5. Shown To Reduce Acne —

CBD oil can be used topically to help with a variety of skin conditions. For example, one way CBD benefits your skin is by stopping breakouts! It does this by regulating the skin’s oil production, which results in less acne…

However, acne happens for a number of reasons. Things such as genetics, bacteria, inflammation of the skin, and the overproduction of sebum (an oily secretion made by sebaceous glands in the skin) can all contribute to acne… (1)

Although, based on recent scientific studies, CBD oil may help treat acne due to its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to reduce sebum production (2). CBD also contains many nutrients like vitamin E that help to protect and improve your skin.

These findings show that cannabidiol has potential to be an effective acne treatment. Not to mention, CBD has a high potential for treating various other skin conditions like eczema by encouraging abnormal cell death…

6. Prevents Seizures and Other Neurological Disorders —

CBD might just prove to be a promising solution for treatment-resistant epilepsy (1) . In a survey conducted online, parents that had children with treatment-resistant epilepsy reported a dramatic reduction in their child’s seizure frequency while taking CBD (2)…

In the same survey, parents also reported their children had experienced increased alertness, better mood, and improved sleep. Some of the side effects included drowsiness and fatigue.

In another study that was conducted using 15 patients suffering with epilepsy, half of the patients were given 200 – 300 mg of CBD daily for 4.5 months. The other half took a placebo for the same amount of time…

Around 4.5 months later, 7 out of 8 patients using CBD had seen improvement of their disease state. Meanwhile, only one patient that used the placebo had seen any improvement (3).

7. Relief With Asthma —

Researchers believe that CBD may help to minimize the inflammation that is experienced by asthma patients. Asthma is an “atopic” disease, which means it causes immediate allergic reactions. This condition causes the airways to be inflamed, often leading to the restriction of airflow.

Because of it’s anti-inflammatory properties, it’s thought that CBD could decrease airway resistance and allow for better breathing. Although, the research is early and more needs to be done to establish the effectiveness of CBD in improving asthma symptoms…

However, so far early research is showing that CBD has promising results when used to relieve asthma due to anti-inflammatory properties. Some studies have also shown that CBD reduces asthma-related pain as well.

This is great because asthma attacks can cause severe pain that can be either very uncomfortable or debilitating in some patients. Interruption of normal airflow can cause additional stress on accessory muscles. CBD helps to alleviate this pain by reducing muscle spasticity and pressure within the lungs.

8. Helps To Improve Diabetes —

One study, which included 4657 adult men and women, showed that current marijuana use was associated with lower levels of fasting insulin and a smaller waist circumference (a factor connected to the onset of diabetes) (1).

A different 2006 study found that Cannabidiol had significantly reduced the development of diabetes in young non-obese mice, from 86% in non-treated mice to only 30% in mice treated with CBD. Treatment also resulted in the dramatic reduction of plasma levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokines (2).

Another way cbd benefits individuals with diabetes is by helping to stop and delay the destruction of insulin-producing pancreatic cells and the production of inflammatory cytokines…

How To Take Or Use CBD

How to take different forms of cbd

As it turns out, there’s a bunch of different ways to use or take CBD. Since it can be offered in many different forms, the choice really is up to you when it comes to how you want to use it.

You can find CBD in various forms, including…

  • Gummies
  • Tinctures
  • Vape Juice
  • Lotion & Topical Products
  • Sprays and more…

These options are all fantastic and provide all of the benefits of CBD. Surprisingly too, many cbd products on the market today, like gummies and vape juice, actually taste amazing! Check out our Koi CBD review here

Although, in some cases, you might have a better chance of receiving the benefits you want when using a certain form of CBD. For example, CBD lotion might work a bit better than CBD vape juice for clearing up acne…

With cannabidiol, the dosage is entirely up to you. Since it’s been shown to be completely safe, there’s really no risk in trying it out. However, most would say it’s best to start at a lower dosage and work your way up to a higher one until you get the benefits your looking for.

Side Effects Of CBD

There aren’t many scientific studies that show CBD to have any negative side effects. In fact, it’s usually well tolerated and considered safe to use.

Although, while not that common, there is a very small percentage of people that claim to experience some minor side effects.

Side Effects can include…

  • Drowsiness
  • Dry mouth
  • Dizziness
  • Changes in appetite

There might of course be more, however these side effects are the ones that are often spoken about. Sometimes, side effects can occur to individuals due to a medical condition or something similar…

Is CBD Legal To Use?

The legality of Cannabidiol (CBD) is often misunderstood. However, unlike THC, this compound is non-psychoactive and doesn’t get you high. Because of this, products with only CBD are able to bypass marijuana laws…

While you can find products that contain both compounds, the legality of these usually vary from state to state. Although, the CBD itself is not really the issue, the THC is…

However, one important thing to know is where the cbd came from. Marijuana or Hemp? This detail will usually tell you if it contains THC…

Many people know THC is the compound that gets you high, but it’s also the compound that drug tests detect when testing for marijuana. With CBD this isn’t the case. Basically, so long as your CBD products don’t have any THC, they should be okay in all states.

CBD extracted from hemp is legal in all 50 states, as it usually contains 0% THC. However, only some states allow for CBD extracted from marijuana to be used for recreational purposes. Some other states require you to have a medical reason…
